Balcones Escarpment visible at Mount Bonnell

The Balcones Fault (Balcones Escarpment), a major geologic boundary in central Texas, runs through the Austin area and is prominently visible from Mount Bonnell. The escarpment marks the transition between the Hill Country (Edwards Plateau) to the west and the Gulf Coastal Plains to the east, producing abrupt elevation changes and distinct soil and vegetation patterns. The escarpment is also associated with habitat for species such as the golden-cheeked warbler, which breeds in juniper-oak woodlands along this geological boundary.
