White Rock Lake named for a shoreline outcrop

White Rock Lake was created in 1911 when the City of Dallas impounded White Rock Creek to form a municipal reservoir. The lake and creek take their name from noticeable light-colored (white) rock outcrops and strata that were visible along the original shoreline. The exposed limestone and sandstone led to the place name White Rock, which was applied to the creek, the lake, and surrounding neighborhood.
