1966 University of Texas Tower sniper attack

On August 1, 1966, Charles Whitman carried out a mass shooting from the observation deck of the Main Building (the UT Tower) at the University of Texas at Austin. During the attack he killed 16 people and wounded 31; earlier that day he had also murdered his mother and his wife. An autopsy after his death found a brain tumor, and whether that tumor contributed to his actions has been debated by researchers. The event is one of the most widely documented crimes in Austin's history and led to changes in police response to active shooter incidents.
