Cave of Saint Ignatius

The Cave of Saint Ignatius, located in Manresa, Catalonia, is a significant sanctuary recognized as Local Cultural Heritage. It features a baroque church and a neoclassical building, commemorating the site where Saint Ignatius of Loyola spent 11 months in prayer and penance from 1522 to 1523. The cave houses an alabaster altarpiece depicting Ignatius as a penitent and includes remarkable artistic elements such as stained-glass windows and bronze reliefs. The baroque church, built in 1759, showcases Jesuit architectural style, while the neo-Classical convent, constructed between 1894 and 1896, serves as a gathering place for pilgrims practicing the Spiritual Exercises. A recent renovation in the early 2020s introduced new mosaics by Jesuit artist Marko Rupnik, enhancing the site's spiritual and artistic significance.
