Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi with structural engineering by Gustave Eiffel, was dedicated on October 28, 1886 as a gift from France and stands on Liberty Island as a symbol of welcome to immigrants and visitors. The statue is made of copper sheeting over an iron and steel framework and has been managed as part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. Access to the island and monument is via ferries operated from Manhattan and New Jersey, and the statue's crown has been accessible to visitors during limited periods following safety-driven closures after the 2001 attacks. The site is a designated National Monument and a frequent subject of preservation and conservation work.
