Charles Street Jail converted to the Liberty Hotel

The Charles Street Jail, a granite jail completed in 1851, was redeveloped and reopened as the Liberty Hotel in 2007 while retaining many interior jail features such as cellblocks and central atria. The adaptive reuse project preserved historic fabric and transformed the building into a luxury hotel with restaurants and event spaces. The site is frequently noted by locals for its visible reuse of a 19th-century civic building in Beacon Hill.
