Hiram C. Smith Milking Shed

The Hiram C. Smith Milking Shed, located west of Winterset, Iowa, is a historic building that showcases early vernacular limestone architecture. Built by one of the township's earliest settlers between 1854 and 1856, this single-story gabled structure is made from locally quarried rubble stone. Its unique construction reflects the simplicity of early farming life in the area, distinguishing it from the work of contemporary stonemasons. The milking shed was recognized for its historical significance and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, alongside Smith's single-room house, making it a noteworthy site for tourists and researchers interested in Iowa's agricultural history.
