Spirit of Detroit (Marshall Fredericks)

The Spirit of Detroit is a 26-foot bronze sculpture by Marshall Fredericks mounted on the facade of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. Installed in 1958, the figure holds a gilt bronze sphere in one hand and a family group in the other and is one of Detroit’s most recognizable civic symbols. The statue is frequently dressed in sports jerseys or scarves by fans after major Detroit team victories. It faces Woodward Avenue and has been a focal point for public gatherings and celebrations.
