Joe Louis Arena (former major sports arena)

Joe Louis Arena opened in 1979 and served as the home of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings until the team moved to Little Caesars Arena after the 2016–17 season. During its operation the arena hosted thousands of professional hockey games, concerts, and civic events. The facility closed in 2017 and demolition occurred in phases beginning in 2019, removing a significant late-20th-century sports infrastructure site from Detroit's riverfront.
