Subsurface 19th‑century remains at Market Square Park

Market Square Park occupies the site of Houston's 19th‑century commercial and civic center. Archaeological monitoring during park redevelopment and adjacent construction has documented buried building foundations, cellars, cisterns, and artifact deposits dating to early downtown Houston. The recorded subsurface features helped identify locations of former commercial structures and informed the park's reconstruction and interpretation.
