Matiabag Palace

Matiabag Palace, located in Gauripur, Assam, is a stunning example of architectural fusion, blending Hindu, Mughal, and British styles. Built between 1904 and 1914 by Raja Prabhat Chandra Barua, it served as a royal guest house and summer residence for the Gauripur royal family. The palace is situated on a hilltop overlooking the Gadadhar river and was constructed by skilled Chinese carpenters. The site is steeped in local legend, with its name derived from a frog sighting that inspired the construction of a temple for Goddess Mahamaya. Recently acquired by the Government of Assam for ₹ 15.20 crore, the palace is set to be restored and transformed into a heritage site and museum, honoring the legacy of notable residents like folk singer Pratima Barua Pandey. Accessible from Dhubri and well-connected to major cities, Matiabag Palace offers a glimpse into the rich cultural history of the region.
