Washington Street as the Mile Square east–west axis and the National Road

Alexander Ralston's 1821 plan for the Mile Square established an east–west baseline that corresponds to present-day Washington Street. Washington Street later became the route of the National Road (U.S. Route 40) through Indianapolis. The Indiana Statehouse at this address sits on Washington Street and aligns with the original city grid established by the early survey.
