Assassination of Malcolm X and arrests at the Audubon Ballroom

On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was shot and mortally wounded while speaking at the Audubon Ballroom in Washington Heights; three men were apprehended at the scene and arrested by police. One of the men, Talmadge Hayer (also known as Thomas Hagan), was caught at the scene and later confessed; two other men were convicted at trial. The convictions of the two other men were later subject to dispute, and Manhattan prosecutors moved to vacate those convictions in 2021. The shooting and arrests occurred at the Audubon Ballroom where Malcolm X had been addressing an audience.
