Tweed Courthouse and the Boss Tweed corruption scandal

In the early 1870s the New York County Courthouse at 52 Chambers Street became a focal point of William M. Tweed and the Tammany Hall ring's extensive corruption, with construction costs massively inflated through fraudulent billing and kickbacks. Public investigations and criminal prosecutions followed, and Tweed was convicted in 1873 for embezzlement and other charges. The courthouse building remains as a historic landmark associated with one of the city's most infamous political corruption cases.
