Abraham Lincoln lay in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda

After his assassination in April 1865, Abraham Lincoln's corpse lay in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda for public viewing before his funeral train departed for Springfield, Illinois. Thousands of mourners filed past his bier during the period he lay in state. The event is a documented part of Lincoln's funeral proceedings and of Civil War–era Washington history.
