Funerals and lying in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda

The Capitol Rotunda has been used for state funerals and for prominent individuals to lie in state or lie in honor; examples include President John F. Kennedy lying in state there in November 1963. The Rotunda has hosted ceremonies and public memorials for presidents, members of Congress, and other national figures, and is an established location for congressional honors. The space remains the official and documented site for many federal commemorative events.
