Belmont Castle

Belmont Castle was a striking neo-Gothic mansion located near Grays in Essex, built around 1795 for wealthy landowner Zachariah Button. This architectural gem featured a four-story tower and luxurious interiors, surrounded by extensive pleasure grounds that included a walled kitchen garden and a Gothic temple. The castle served as a cultural hub in the 19th century, hosting local cricket matches and music gatherings. Despite its historical significance, the mansion was demolished in 1943 to make way for a chalk quarry, but its legacy continues through the nearby Belmont Castle Academy. Today, visitors can explore the area’s rich history and the remnants of its once-grand estate.
