5Pointz (Aerosol Art Center)

5Pointz was an outdoor aerosol art venue in Long Island City where hundreds of graffiti and street artists painted commissioned and unsanctioned murals on a warehouse complex beginning in the early 1990s under the curatorship of Jonathan "Meres" Cohen. In November 2013 the building owner whitewashed many murals and the complex was demolished in 2014 to make way for residential development. In 2018 a U.S. federal court found that the destruction violated the Visual Artists Rights Act and awarded statutory damages to a group of artists. The site is widely documented as a seminal location in New York City's contemporary graffiti and street-art history.
