New York Crystal Palace destroyed by fire

The New York Crystal Palace was erected for the 1853 Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations on a site now occupied by Bryant Park and the New York Public Library. The iron-and-glass structure burned down in 1858, eliminating the landmark exhibition hall. Contemporary accounts and later histories document the palace’s brief existence and its destruction by fire.
