Castle William and the British evacuation of Boston (1776)

The site of Fort Independence was originally home to Castle William, a colonial fort held by British forces during the American Revolution. British troops abandoned Boston in March 1776 after Continental Army batteries were placed on Dorchester Heights, an event that directly involved Castle Island's fortifications. The island's fortifications were rebuilt several times after 1776, eventually resulting in the current Fort Independence.
