A Massive Oil Tank Roof Was Blasted Hundreds of Feet Into the Sky Over Moscow photo 1
A huge circular piece of metal was launched high above southeastern Moscow after an explosion tore through an oil storage tank at the Moscow Oil Refinery on June 18, 2026. The object was the roof of a large petroleum storage tank. The explosion separated much of the roof from the tank and threw it hundreds of feet into the air, where it rotated above the refinery before eventually falling back toward the industrial complex. The incident happened during a major Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow and its surrounding region. The Moscow Oil Refinery is located in the Kapotnya district, inside the Moscow Ring Road and roughly 10 miles southeast of the Kremlin. It is one of the capital region's most important fuel-processing facilities and supplies gasoline, diesel and other petroleum products to Moscow and the surrounding area. The refinery had already been targeted two days earlier, on June 16, when another attack damaged part of its processing equipment. On June 18, another wave of drones approached Moscow, triggering air-defense activity across the region. Some of the drones reached the refinery. Explosions were followed by large fires inside the complex. Thick black smoke rose above Kapotnya and could be seen from surrounding residential neighborhoods. Videos recorded from nearby buildings showed flames burning around refinery equipment while emergency crews responded. One of the most dramatic explosions occurred around a large storage tank. Petroleum storage tanks can be enormous structures, sometimes measuring tens of meters across. Their wide circular roofs cover large volumes of gasoline, crude oil or other petroleum products. During the June 18 explosion, pressure inside or around one of those tanks appears to have become powerful enough to separate its roof from the tank shell. Instead of immediately breaking apart, a substantial portion of the circular roof stayed together. The force beneath it launched the metal structure upward. Video from the area shows the roof rising rapidly above the refinery, rotating as it climbs and reaching a height far above surrounding buildings and industrial equipment. The size of the object becomes more apparent when compared with the refinery below. This was not a lightweight sheet of metal caught by the wind. It was a major structural component from an industrial storage tank. Throwing something that large so far into the air required an enormous release of energy. The exact sequence that caused the individual tank to explode has not been fully established publicly. Ukrainian drones were attacking the refinery while Russian air defenses were attempting to intercept incoming aircraft. Available footage establishes that the tank explosion occurred during the attack, but imagery alone does not determine exactly what struck the tank or initiated the blast. The wider damage was substantial. Industry sources reported damage to refinery equipment, pipelines, storage tanks and sections of the Euro+ processing unit. Fires continued burning around parts of the facility following the strikes. The refinery is particularly significant because of its location. Unlike many Russian oil facilities targeted during the war, the Moscow Oil Refinery is not isolated hundreds of miles from a major city. It sits directly within Moscow's urban area. Apartment buildings and neighborhoods surround Kapotnya, meaning residents were able to see smoke and flames rising from the refinery. The attack also affected transportation around Moscow. Airports temporarily restricted operations as drones were detected around the capital, resulting in flight delays and cancellations. Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Russian oil refineries and fuel infrastructure during the war, arguing that the facilities generate revenue and provide fuel connected to Russia's military operations. Russia has condemned the attacks and accused Ukraine of targeting civilian and economic infrastructure. The Moscow refinery has become an increasingly important target because of both its economic role and its proximity to the Russian capital. But the airborne tank roof produced one of the most unusual scenes from the June 18 attack. Industrial explosions often scatter fragments across a site. This blast instead removed a broad circular structure largely intact and sent it high above the facility. For several seconds, the enormous piece of refinery equipment was completely separated from the structure it had covered, spinning through open air while a column of smoke rose behind it. The refinery area associated with the attack is located around 55.64436° N, 37.80544° E in Moscow's Kapotnya district. The facility has operated since 1938 and today contains a dense network of storage tanks, processing units, pipelines and other equipment spread across a large industrial complex. On June 18, one of those ordinary storage tanks became the source of an extraordinary scene. A powerful explosion ripped away its enormous circular roof and launched it hundreds of feet above Moscow before gravity finally brought it back down.
