When the body of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune was discovered hanging from a tree behind a vacant house in Jackson, Mississippi, the scene immediately raised disturbing questions. Nearly two months later, investigators say the reality was different from what the scene initially appeared to show: Fortune had already been killed somewhere else, and her body was later placed in the tree. Fortune was found on the evening of August 3 behind a vacant home in the 500 block of Road of Remembrance in west Jackson. Neighbors alerted authorities, and police initially released few details while the Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office investigated her death. The coordinates above identify the 500 block of Road of Remembrance, rather than a publicly confirmed exact backyard location. Fortune was identified several days later. She was originally from Marion, Kentucky, but had spent much of the previous 13 years in Jackson. She was a mother of four and had recently returned to Kentucky for a family gathering, where relatives saw her shortly before her death. Her family said she had struggled at times with homelessness and addiction, but repeatedly returned to Jackson because her children were there. For weeks, the circumstances surrounding her death remained unclear. Her mother, Christy Spivey, publicly said she did not believe her daughter had taken her own life. At the same time, she cautioned against assuming the death was racially motivated. The way Fortune had been found carried unavoidable historical associations in Mississippi, where racial terror lynchings are a documented part of the state's past. Her death generated national attention before authorities had determined exactly what happened. By September, investigators publicly classified the case as a homicide. Then a preliminary court hearing revealed a major development: police believe Fortune was already dead before she was hung from the tree. Detective Samuel Dukes testified that investigators believe she was killed at another location and that her body remained at the Road of Remembrance property for roughly two to three days before it was discovered. Police have described the hanging as a staged event. Authorities have not publicly established that whoever staged the scene specifically intended it to resemble a lynching, and the Associated Press later issued a clarification making that distinction. The exact reason her body was placed in the tree has not been publicly explained. Investigators have instead focused on what they describe as a dispute involving drugs. Three men have now been charged with murder in connection with Fortune's death. Jarques Ratliff, 51, became the first person arrested in September. Police said Ratliff knew Fortune, though the exact nature of their relationship has not been fully detailed publicly. Ratliff pleaded not guilty. Earnest Lloyd Jr., 25, was arrested later in September and also charged with murder. A third man, Eric Clark, 45, surrendered after authorities obtained a warrant for his arrest. He was also charged with murder, and a judge later set his bond at $5 million. Police Chief RaShall Brackney has said investigators believe additional arrests or conspiracy charges could still follow. Investigators have interviewed roughly 15 people while attempting to reconstruct Fortune's final days. During Ratliff's preliminary hearing, police testimony provided some of the clearest public details yet about the investigation. Detectives testified that Fortune apparently fought during the confrontation that ended in her death. Authorities still have not publicly released her exact medical cause of death. The legal case took another step forward on September 30. A Jackson municipal judge ruled there was probable cause for the murder case against Ratliff to proceed to a Hinds County grand jury. Ratliff was denied bond again and remained in custody. The grand jury will determine whether there is sufficient evidence to indict him and move the case toward trial. The charges against the men remain allegations, and guilt has not been established in court. Meanwhile, the vacant property where Fortune was found has become a memorial site. Flowers, balloons, stuffed animals, pinwheels and a photograph of Fortune appeared beneath the tree after her death. Her mother later traveled from Kentucky and visited the location while attending court proceedings in Jackson. The neighborhood itself is a residential section of west Jackson, far removed from the type of isolated rural setting that many people initially imagined when they heard that a woman had been found hanging from a tree. Homes line Road of Remembrance, and residents reported seeing Fortune in the area before her death. One neighbor told local television reporters that she had encountered Fortune walking through the neighborhood about two days before her body was discovered. She remembered speaking with her briefly after recognizing her from a nearby park. That sighting became particularly significant once investigators said Fortune had probably been dead for two to three days before she was found. Her death also left four children without their mother. Family members have described Fortune's life as complicated, but they have repeatedly pushed back against allowing those struggles to define what happened to her. Her mother has said that regardless of addiction, homelessness or the circumstances surrounding the alleged drug dispute, her daughter did not deserve to be killed. The investigation remains active. What initially appeared to be a mysterious hanging behind a vacant Jackson home is now being treated as a murder involving multiple people, a second location and an intentionally staged scene. Nearly two months after Fortune was found, investigators have answered one of the biggest questions surrounding the case. She did not die hanging from that tree. Now the unresolved question is exactly what happened before her body was brought there, and how many people were involved.
