Willy the Gray Whale of the Willapa River

For those who witnessed it, the sight was surreal: a whale surfacing among cow fields, moving through waters that looked more like a creek than a path from the ocean. Researchers believe Willy, a juvenile likely only one or two years old, may have been feeding near the bay before following the tide upriver and becoming disoriented. For several days, he traveled these waters as experts and local communities watched, hoping he would find his way back to sea. Members of nearby tribes gathered along the river, offering songs in an effort to guide him home. But the journey came to an end not far from here. Willy was later found in a shallow stretch of the river, having died before he could return to the ocean.
