Grand Army of the Republic Building

The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Building, located in downtown Detroit, Michigan, is a historic site recognized for its Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. Constructed in 1897, it originally served as a meeting place for Civil War veterans and included shops, offices, and an auditorium. After the GAR's membership declined, the city took ownership in 1934. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Over the years, it has seen various ownerships and renovation plans, including a brief period as a dining destination with notable restaurants. As of February 2023, it was sold to Barbat Holdings, marking another chapter in its storied history. This building not only reflects Detroit's architectural heritage but also serves as a memorial to Civil War veterans, making it a point of interest for both tourists and researchers.
