Mother Bethel AME Church (Richard Allen's congregation)

Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church is the founding church of the AME denomination established by Richard Allen. The congregation purchased the lot at 419 S 6th Street in 1794 and held early AME meetings there, making it a longstanding site of African American religious organization. The church has been central to Black civic life in Philadelphia since the late 18th century.
