Oklahoma City National Memorial – Symbolic Gates and Field of Empty Chairs

The Oklahoma City National Memorial commemorates the April 19, 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Its outdoor Symbolic Gates are inscribed 9:01 and 9:03 to represent the times before and after the blast, and the Field of Empty Chairs contains 168 chairs, one for each person killed. The site also preserves the Survivor Tree, an American elm that survived the bombing and stands as a living symbol on the memorial grounds.
